The University of South Carolina welcomes President-elect Michael Amérides, who will be the university’s 30th president.

Michael Ameridis, Chancellor of the University of Illinois-Chicago since 2015, has been appointed as the 30th president of the University of South Carolina.

Ameridis was unanimously chosen Friday (January 14) by the university’s Board of Trustees to lead the state’s leading university system.

The move marks a return for Ameridis, who has spent more than two decades on campus at Columbia, serving as professor of chemical engineering, department chair, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing, executive vice president for academic affairs, and president of the university. He left the university to lead the Chicago Foundation in 2015.

“I am excited and honored to be returning to the University of South Carolina as its next president,” says Amérides. “With its academics, research, and vibrant culture, the university system is extremely important to the people of South Carolina and the future of the state. I feel proud to be able to lead this great institution.”

Ameridis, 59, is a Greek citizen who came to the United States to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received his Ph.D. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1991. He then spent a few years in industry, working as a research engineer at W.R. Grace and Co. , before arriving in Colombia in August 1994 as an assistant professor of chemical engineering.

His wife, Iru Ajilopolo Ameridis, and their children are also associated with the University of South Carolina. Aggelopoulou-Amiridis received her MA and PhD degrees from the university, while their daughter, Aspasia, received her BA in 2019 and their son, Dimitri, is a member of the 2022 UofSC class.
